Are Your Working Out So Much That It’s Lowering Your Sex Drive?

A new study found that if you love to workout, it could be the reason why you’re not so into sex.

Have you ever felt you lack the energy or will to share intimacy with your significant other? Or maybe you’re always in that mood and you hate it because you can’t concentrate on being productive. Well, there’s good news – exercise may be your answer for either situation!

Researchers found that your workout intensity level and frequency play a part in your libido. They surveyed 1,000 guys to make sure they had an accurate assessment. Guys who did serious, intense workouts on a regular basis reported that they weren’t that into sex and didn’t feel like it as often. Guys who regularly engaged in light to moderate exercise reported having higher libidos than the guys who did serious, intense workouts.

The researchers wondered about the results and threw around a few theories. They think that if you’re hitting the gym hard everyday, you’ll obviously come home too tired for most things, like sex. But, that’s only one possibility.

They also state that after an intense workout, your testosterone levels drop temporarily. Testosterone is a major factor in your libido – and if you’re suddenly experiencing a drop in testosterone, that will have a temporary, but significant short-term effect on you wanting to engage in intimate activities. Let’s say you’ve finished a very intense workout then went home. Depending on how late you get home, your testosterone may be down all the way until bedtime (if the time you usually got to bed is only a couple of hours from when you get home). That means your libido will be down all the way until you’re already asleep. When you wake up, you’ve got to get ready for work so even if your libido is high, there’s no time for sex. Then you hit the gym super hard after work and you come home late with a low libido – the cycle repeats!

Whatever the cause, the researchers certainly concluded that your libido is linked to your workout level. That means if you want to tone down your libido, hit the gym more. If you want to boost your libido and you’re hitting the gym hard, then replace some of your workout time with intimate time. It’s not really a bad deal, according to the University of California, Santa Barbara, average sexual activity burns 5 calories per minute. If you and your loved partner are a bit more passionate, then you’ll burn more than that.

Take control of your sex life and libido by modifying your workout regimen. Remember, sex is a workout in it of itself, and you get the added benefit of sharing your love with your significant other.
